HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - Three-time defending champion Charlotte holds a 12-shot lead over Temple and Xavier after Friday's opening round of the 2009 Atlantic 10 Golf Championship at Mission Inn Resort.
Playing under brilliant sunshine on the 6,887-yard, par-71 course, the 49ers fired a two-under 282, while Temple and Xavier are tied for second at 294.
Vying to become the first A-10 program to win four straight titles since Penn State won five consecutive crowns from 1986-91, Charlotte was paced by senior Stefan Wiedergruen, who leads the field with a three-under 68 after recording five opening round birdies. The Waiblingen, Germany, native finished tied for fifth overall last season with a five-under par 211.
"I didn't know what number I needed to shoot to help the team. I just tried to hit every shot as well as I could," said Wiedergruen.
"The whole team worked really hard coming into this week and everyone gave everything they had. Today, I think it worked out."
Charlotte junior Corey Nagy and freshman Paul Ferrier finished tied for fourth overall at even par, while freshman Tyler Mitchell closed out his round at one-over par. 49ers sophomore Will Golden finished at two-over.
St. Bonaventure is in fourth place at 12-over par 296, followed by Rhode Island (299), Richmond (306), Saint Joseph's (308), Dayton (313), George Washington (314), Duquesne (319), La Salle (320) and Fordham (325).
St. Bonaventure teammates Brennan Payne and Nathan Peck are tied for second overall at one-under par, while Xavier's Mike Beausejour, Kevin Busteed of Temple, Rhode Island's Taylor Fontaine, Steve Hudacek of Saint Joseph's and Mitchell are tied for sixth overall at 72.
Second round action commences at 8:00am on Saturday. For complete coverage of the 2009 Atlantic 10 Golf Championship, log on to www.atlantic10.org
