HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - Junior Corey Nagy fired a two-under par 69 to take a two-shot lead over teammate Stefan Wiedergruen atop the leaderboard as Charlotte moved one step closer to its fourth consecutive title after second round action on Saturday at the 2009 Atlantic 10 Golf Championship.
Playing under brilliant sunshine on the 6,887-yard, par-71 course at Mission Inn Resort, the 49ers shot a six-over par 290 and hold a 16-shot advantage over runner-up Xavier (+20) heading into Sunday's final round.
Temple is in third place at 33-over par, followed by St. Bonaventure (+34), Richmond (+40), Rhode Island (+42), Dayton (+57), Saint Joseph's (+62), George Washington (+64), Duquesne (+82), La Salle (+84) and Fordham (+102).
Nagy registered four birdies on the day, raising his total to seven for the Championship, and leads the field at two-under overall. Charlotte freshman Paul Ferrier posted a 73 in second round action, while Wiedergruen and teammate Tyler Mitchell each shot three-over for their rounds. XU was led by junior Alan Glynn and freshman Sebastian MacLean, who shot even par and one-over for their rounds on Saturday.
"I really stayed patient all day long and didn't really get ahead of myself. I was really disciplined on my targets and had a lot of fun," said Nagy, who finished runner-up at last year's Championship at 10-under par.
"I am just going to take what I have learned the last two days and apply it to tomorrow, go out and have fun and hopefully take home the title."
Nagy (-2), Wiedergruen (even) and Ferrier (+2) hold the top three spots in the individual standings thru 36 holes, while MacLean and Brennan Payne of St. Bonaventure are tied for fourth place at three-over. Mitchell shares sixth place with Temple's Andrew Mason and Taylor Fontaine of Rhode Island at four-over par. Xavier sophomore Peter O'Neil (+5) stands ninth overall, while Nathan Peck of St. Bonaventure and Temple's Eric Plisko are tied for 10th place at six-over.
