GW Leads Tight Men's Golf Championship Race After Day One

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla.--George Washington men's golf surged into first place, but just two strokes separates the top three teams after day one of the 2012 Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championship Friday, which is being played at the par 72, 7,055-yard Heron Bay Golf Club. Playing as the sixth seed, GW shot a 284 in the first round to grab onto first place. Richmond is one stroke back at 285 and six-time defending champion Charlotte is third with a 286. The individual race is close also, with just two strokes between the top 10 golfers, representing spots one through six. Rhode Island's Andrew Fiorenzano and Martin Liu from George Washington each carded a three-under 69 to tie for the lead. Charlotte teammates Paul Ferrier and Raoul Menard, along with Daniel Walker of Richmond all tied at two-under with a 70. There was one Eagle and 96 birdies in the first round. Dayton's George Rohde III shot an Eagle on hole 16 while Ferrier led all played with seven birdies. Liu, Walker and Yuki Kato of Xavier each had six birdies. Xavier is in fourth with a 290 and Rhode Island placed fifth on day one with a 291. Dayton (293), Fordham (295) and Saint Joseph's (298) rounded out the top eight team finishes. The second round of the 54-hole championship will be played Sunday.
