WINTER GARDEN, Fla. - Defending champion Charlotte shares the lead with the University of Rhode Island after the first round of the Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championship, which is being played at Orange County National Golf Center.
The two teams shot a 10-under par 278 on the par 72, 6,882-yard Panther Lake course, and hold just a one-stroke lead over Dayton, who entered the clubhouse with a team score of 279. Xavier stands fourth finishing four-over at 292. St. Bonaventure is tied for fifth with Richmond at 293 while Saint Joseph's (298), George Washington (299), Temple (300), Duquesne (308), Fordham (311) and La Salle (318) fill out the field.
Individually, behind the strength of nine birdies on the afternoon, junior Rob Chappell (Cincinnati, Ohio) of Dayton tied the A-10 18-hole record carding a 64 on the day, which is just one stroke off the course record. Chappell's 64 ties for the lowest opening round score recorded in the A-10 Championship after Charlotte's Matt Mincer shot a 64 to open A-10 play in last year's Championship.
Charlotte senior Jonas Enander Hedin (Taby, Sweden) is two strokes off the lead with a 66, followed closely by a trio of players, Rhode Island's Bill McDonald (West Hartford, Conn.) and Brad Valois (Warwick, R.I.) and Charlotte's Stefan Wiedergruen (Waiblingen, Germany), who each notched a 69.
In all, 18 golfers shot par or under and 11 are within six strokes of the lead.
In addition to the golfers above, other team leaders include senior Brian Keating (Cincinnati, Ohio) of Xavier (t6th), junior Brennan Payne (Arcade, N.Y.) for St. Bonaventure (t12th), senior Jordan Utley (Richmond, Va.) of Richmond (t6th), freshman Josh Webb (Sparta, N.J.) for Saint Joseph's (t6th), senior Conor McMahon (Portsmouth, R.I.) for George Washington (t15th), freshman Andrew Mason (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) for Temple (t20th), junior Brian Sidone (Ebensburg, Pa.) of Duquesne (t28th), senior Mike Finocchi (North Attleboro, Mass.) for Fordham (t28th) and senior Chris Caimano (Wrightstown, Pa.) leads La Salle (t28th).
