ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. -- Recent St. Bonaventure graduate Andy Whalen has been named the men's golf coach, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Steve Watson announced on Friday.
Whalen graduated in May after a stellar four-year career as a Bonnie. He is the just fourth coach to take over the program in the last 41 years.
"Andy showcased more than just his athletic abilities when he was a student-athlete at St. Bonaventure," said Watson. "He made a positive impression on the entire department and most importantly displayed to Steve Campbell that he has the qualities it takes to be a head coach. I have a lot of confidence that Andy will step in and continue to build on a rising golf program."
A native of Conklin, N.Y., Whalen was a four-year starter for the Bonnies and was a major factor in the turnaround of the program. Whalen helped lead the Brown and White to 10 tournament titles over his four seasons while serving as team captain during his final campaign.
"Its honor to return to St. Bonaventure as the head golf coach," said Whalen. "I know the opportunity that lies in front of me and I'm excited for the challenge. Being a part of the program for four years I know the shape it's in and what is expected. I learned from the best in coach Campbell and look forward continuing the sport I love."
Whalen played in every round of every tournament over his four seasons in the Brown and White. He led the team in stroke average as a junior and senior, compiling 15 tops 10s and 21 top 20 finishes during his career. The team MVP in 2007, Whalen was a finalist in the 2006 SWNY-NWPA Men's Amateur at Bartlett Country Club. Whalen owns program records for low rounds over 18 holes, 36 holes and 54 holes while ranking third in career rounds in the 60s.
Whalen will take over a St. Bonaventure squad that returns three of its five starters in senior Brennan Payne, junior Nathan Peck and sophomore Chris Stoddard.
