Charlotte's Corey Nagy Qualifies For 2009 U.S. Amateur Golf Championship

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Charlotte senior Corey Nagy, a three-time GCAA honorable mention All-America, shot a an eight-under par 134 to tie for first place at the U.S. Amateur Sectional Qualifying in Blythewood, S.C., and earned a spot in this month's U.S. Amateur Championship.

Nagy, who also qualified for the 2008 U.S. Amateur, posted rounds of six-under par 65 and two-under par 69 to tie Phillip Mollica for first place at the sectional qualifying event at Columbia Country Club in Blythewood, July 27-28. The top five finishers from the sectional advanced.

The 2009 US Amateur will be held Aug. 24-30 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Nagy, the 2009 Atlantic 10 individual medalist, led Charlotte to its fifth straight NCAA appearance and fourth straight A-10 title in 2009. He finished the season with a team-best 73.28 stroke average and owns a school-record 72.51 career stroke average heading into his senior campaign. Nagy tied for fourth at the 2009 NCAA Regional to gain the single at-large spot to advance to the NCAA Championships, where he tied for 36th.

Nagy is the first golfer in school history to earn three straight all-America honors. He was named to the GCAA Freshman All-America team in 2007 while earning his first honorable mention award as the 49ers finished in a tie for third at the NCAA Championships. In 2008, Nagy placed 16th at the NCAA Championships to lead the 49ers into a tie for eighth-place. He posted a career-best 72.14 stroke average and was tabbed honorable mention All-America for the second time. He also earned Golfweek honorable mention All-America honors as a sophomore. This year, as a junior, Nagy advanced as an individual to the NCAA Championship after the 49ers were eliminated at the NCAA Regional and tied for 36th at the finals.

In three seasons, Nagy has finished first (2009), second (2008) and third (2007) at the Atlantic 10 Championship, earning All-Atlantic 10 honors each season.
