WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Terry Shaffer has been hired as the new head coach for men's golf at The George Washington University, GW Senior Associate Director of Athletics, Mary Jo Warner, has announced. Shaffer replaces former GW coach Scott Allen who resigned in August to accept a similar position at the University of Pennsylvania.

"Terry is a former member of the GW golf team and comes to us with a broad range of coaching and teaching experiences," Warner said. "I am confident that our team will succeed under his direction."

"GW and the team's former coach, Scott Allen, have done a terrific job in building this golf program and making it successful," Shaffer said. "This year's program will be no different as it continues to become one of the best programs in the Atlantic 10 and the NCAA. Make no mistake about it, with the talent this team has, this year and subsequent years look very bright. We have great plans for the future. I have a heart-felt passion to help our golfers succeed in all of their endeavors both on, and off, the course."

A 1979 graduate of GW, Shaffer returns to his alma mater with 29-plus years of experience in the golf industry. His resume includes more than 16 years as a PGA Head Golf Professional, four years as the head golf coach at a Division I university (Mount St. Mary's), and working with thousands of students helping to promote and develop their golf skills. Shaffer has worked at Bethesda Country Club, Prospect Bay C.C., and has been with Atlantic Golf for the past eight years.

Shaffer was a four-year letterwinner for the Colonials (1976-79) and was named the team MVP as a senior in 1979.

The Colonials open the 2008-09 season on Sept. 12-13 in the 36-hole Navy Fall Invitational at Annapolis, Md.
