Hendry, Matthews Earn A-10 Weekly Golf Nods
Sept. 19, 2012
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Charlotte’s Dan Hendry and Temple’s Brandon Matthews have been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Golf Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, the league office announced on Wednesday. The two student-athletes were recognized for tournaments played during the week of Sept. 12-18. Hendry led Charlotte for the second week in a row, finishing in a tie for fourth among the 81 golfers at the 7,242 yard-par 72 Tar Heel Invitational. The Dubai native carded a team-best 65 in the opening round, before firing 73-71 to close out the event at 7-under (209), while as a team, Charlotte finished third among the field of 14. Hendry owns Charlotte’s best record (115-34) and win percentage (.772) this season. The Niners finished ahead of 11 teams, including a trio of ACC teams, Notre Dame and a bevy of regional foes. Matthews carded a 6-under par 64 on the final round of the McLaughlin (Sept. 16) to lead Temple at the prestigious Bethpage Red Course. It was the lowest round at The McLaughlin, and the lowest by a Temple golfer since Walter Brown shot a school-record 63 at the 1973 Yale Invitational. Matthews, who also set the Owl freshman mark for a single round, finished tied for seventh with an even par 210 (72-74-64). 2013 A-10 GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP
