NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Atlantic 10 Conference boasts a pair of men’s soccer teams in the latest national rankings. Charlotte is listed No. 14 in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Top 25 Poll and No. 19 in Soccer America’s Top 25 Poll, while Xavier is listed No. 24 according to TopDrawerSoccer.com.

Charlotte, which has won five of its first six matches played, is coming off a thrilling 2-1 overtime upset of then-ranked No. 12 Virginia in Charlottesville. Under the direction of fifth-year head coach Jeremy Gunn the 49ers lead the A-10 in goals (11) and goals per game (1.83) and are tied with Xavier and Fordham for the league-lead in shutouts (3). Junior midfielder Jennings Rex paces Charlotte with three goals on the young season, while reigning A-10 Player of the Week Tyler Gibson, Donnie Smith, Evan James and Issac Caughren have each registered two goals. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Klay Davis leads the 49ers’ tenacious defense, with three shutouts, 19 saves and a .826 save percentage.

Xavier is 4-1 in the young season and recently recorded an upset of its own, downing No. 13 Northern Illinois at Northwestern’s Lakeside Classic. Second-year coach Andy Fleming’s squad leads the Atlantic 10 in six statistical categories, including points (32; 6.4 ppg), assists (14), assists per game (2.80) and shutouts (3), while limiting its opponents to a league-best three goals this fall and a 0.59 goals against average. XU’s balanced offensive attack, which has seen seven different players score so far this season, is led by a pair of forwards in junior Luke Spencer (2g, 2a, 6 pts) and rookie James Weber (2g, 4pts). In goal, 2010 A-10 Championship Most Outstanding Player Justin Marshall owns a 0.61 goals against average with 12 saves and two shutouts.
