Oldham, Martinelli Claim A-10 Soccer Weekly Awards
Sept. 24, 2012 NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Richmond’s Houston Oldham was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week, while Temple’s Jared Martinelli collected top Rookie honors for the second straight week, the league office announced on Monday. Both Oldham and Martinelli were recognized for games played Sept. 17-23. Oldham, a senior midfielder, scored three times in two games last week, leading the Spiders to a perfect 2-0 record at Robins Stadium and improving UR’s record to 3-5-0 on the season. The Nashville, Tenn., native opened the week with a pair of goals against visiting Longwood, before racking up his third score of the week in the opening minutes against the Keydets, as he drilled a shot from the right side into the net. Oldham currently leads Richmond with seven points this fall, including a team-best three goals and one assist. Martinelli continued to prove his anticipated potential for the Temple Owls, as he added six more points to his season total last week, including two goals and two assists. Martinelli helped the Owls move back to the .500 mark and win back-to-back games for the first time this season. Against Saint Peter’s he put Temple on the board first by providing an assist on teammate Cody Calafiore’s goal in the 13th minute. Sunday against Howard (Sept. 23) proved to be a scoring spree for the freshman midfielder, as he buried two balls in the back of the net—one on a penalty kick—and added a helper on junior Jake Lister’s 66th minute goal. 2012 A-10 MEN'S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP
