McCarthy, Lazorko Earn Men's Soccer Weekly Nods
Oct. 1, 2012
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – La Salle’s John McCarthy and Tim Lazorko of Saint Joseph’s have been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Soccer Player and Rookie of the week, respectively, the league office announced on Monday. The two student-athletes were honored for games played during the week of Sept. 24-30. McCarthy helped La Salle to an unbeaten week and the program’s best non-conference record since 1994 (6-2-2), as the junior goalkeeper recorded two overtime shutouts against UMBC (Sept. 25) and Saint Peter’s (Sept. 29). McCarthy fought off 17 shots, including nine on-goal to preserve a scoreless double-overtime draw at UMBC. He followed that performance with two saves among the 10 on goal to assist in the 1-0 overtime victory at St. Peter’s. McCarthy now has 56 saves and five shutouts on the season. Lazorko paced Saint Joseph’s to a perfect 2-0 week with wins over Bucknell and Loyola (MD). The freshman midfielder opened the seven-day stretch with his first collegiate goal – the game-winner – in the 81st minute against Bucknell (Sept. 25), snapping the Bison’s five-game winning streak and handing the program its first home loss of the season. Lazorko then registered the game-tying goal against Loyola (Sept. 29) in the 84th minute, forcing the match into overtime. 2012 A-10 MEN'S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP
