Gentile, McCarthy, Kristo Earn A-10 Men's Soccer Weekly Citations
Oct. 17, 2011 NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Charlotte’s Guiseppe Gentile and La Salle’s John McCarthy have been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Soccer Co-Players of the Week, while Robbie Kristo of Saint Louis is the league’s Rookie of the Week, the Conference office announced on Monday. Gentile, a freshman forward, propelled Charlotte to a pair of A-10 wins over the weekend, including a convincing 5-1 defeat of St. Bonaventure and a 1-0 victory over Duquesne. The local Charlotte product opened the weekend with his first career hat trick and the A-10’s lone three-goal outing this season against the Bonnies on Friday, before registering the game-winning goal in the 49ers shutout versus the Dukes on Sunday. Gentile has now tallied a total of seven goals with six of them coming in the 49ers’ last four contests. For his efforts over the weekend, Gentile was also named National Player of the Week by College Soccer News. McCarthy, a sophomore goalkeeper, recorded 25 saves and stifled the Rhode Island and Massachusetts’ offensive attacks in a 1-0-1 weekend for La Salle. The Cinnaminson, N.J., native stopped a career-high 14 shots in the Explorers’ 2-1 double overtime victory against Rhody, before collecting 11 saves in a scoreless double-overtime outing versus the Minutemen. McCarthy has helped La Salle go 4-1-3 in its last eight games, including an unbeaten start in A-10 play (2-0-2). He now ranks first in the league in saves (85) and saves per game (7.73). Kristo, a freshman forward, came off the bench to net a pair of game-winning goals and lead Saint Louis to a 2-0 weekend with victories over Duquesne and St. Bonaventure. The local St. Louis product scored his first goal on Friday in the 88th minute against the Dukes, as he took the ball to the right side, and fired into the opposite netting for his first collegiate goal and the Billiken victory. Kristo followed with his second golden goal of the weekend versus the Bonnies on Sunday, scoring in the 81st minute on an open look for the game's only tally.
