NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - No. 25 Charlotte's Giuseppe Gentile was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week, while Butler's Jeff Adkins collected top Rookie honors, the league office announced on Monday. Both Gentile and Adkins were honored for games played during the week of Oct. 15-21.
Giuseppe paced the 49ers to a pair of home wins over A-10 foes Massachusetts (Oct. 19) and Rhode Island (Oct. 21) last weekend. The local Charlotte product accumulated eight points in the two outings including three goals and two assists. He opened the weekend with five points on two goals and an assist in the 49ers 4-0 shutout of the Minutemen, before adding another goal and assist against URI (6-1) on Sunday. Adkins led Butler to an unbeaten (1-0-1) weekend, including a 2-1 victory at Saint Joseph's on Sunday (Oct. 21). The Shelby Township, Mich., native scored the biggest goal of his young career, as he drilled a shot from 22 yards out with 1:19 remaining to lift the Bulldogs to their second A-10 Conference win. Adkins also added an assist against the Hawks. Against Temple, Adkins netted one of Butler's three goals in the final 16 minutes to help the Bulldogs tie league-leading Temple, 3-3. The Bulldogs will return to Indianapolis to play their final two home matches of the season. Butler will host George Washington on Friday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m., before wrapping up the home slate against Charlotte on Sunday (Oct. 28) at 1 p.m.
