2009 All-Conference Teams

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - St. Bonaventure's Sam Maheu was named the 2009 Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Year, Tim Ream of Saint Louis was tabbed the Defensive Player of the Year and Fordham's Tim Richardson earned Midfielder of the Year honors in voting conducted by the league's head coaches.

In that same vote, Alex Sweetin of Saint Louis was honored as the Rookie of the Year and Dayton head coach Dennis Currier earned the Coach of the Year honors. In a vote of the A-10's sports information directors, Charlotte's Adam Gross was named the Student-Athlete of the Year.

Maheu leads the league in overall points (31), is tied for first in the league in assists (7) and is second in the Conference in goals. He led St. Bonaventure to its first A-10 Championship appearance since 1999. The senior from Ottawa, Ontario was a two-time A-10 Player of the Week this season and ranks in the top 10 at St. Bonaventure for all-time points.

Ream anchors a Saint Louis defense that has allowed just six goals (0.67) in nine Conference match-ups. A local St. Louis product, the senior defender has also contributed five goals and three assists to rank second in scoring on the Billikens' roster with 13 points. He helped Saint Louis to a first-round bye and the second seed in the A-10 Championship.

Richardson, a North Palmerston, New Zealand native, led the Rams in goals (6), points (14) and game-winning goals (3). He helped Fordham to the third seed in the A-10 Championship, its highest seed since earning the second seed in 1998. The sophomore midfielder ranks among the top 10 in the league in goals scored.

Sweetin has enjoyed an impressive rookie season for Saint Louis. The midfielder from Overland, Kan., had an immediate impact on the Billikens after leading the team in assists (6) and tying for third on the squad in total points (8). He is also tied for sixth in the league in assists and was named an A-10 Rookie of the Week during the season.
 

 

Maheu, Ream and Richardson are joined on the All-Conference first-team by Dayton's Isaac Kissi and Ryan Handbury; Andy Stadler of George Washington; Ben Arikian from Massachusetts; Charlotte's Adam Gross; J.T. Noone of Temple; Rhode Island's Dwayne Williams and Fordham's Ryan Meara.

The second-team is comprised of Evan James and Luke Exley from Charlotte; Mike Roach of Saint Louis; Dayton's Alex Torda and Tyler Picard; Gary Crooks and Andres Ruiz of Rhode Island; Andrew Henshaw of Massachusetts and Duquesne's Alex Trujillo.

Sweetin headlines the All-Rookie team which consists of teammate Benny Estes; La Salle's Glenroy Chapman and Jeff Pio; Rhode Island's Thomas Lindroos; Evan McCreary of Dayton; Richmond's Houston Oldham; Josh Patterson from Duquesne; Charlotte's Jennings Rex; George Washington's Seth Rudolph and Xavier's Luke Spencer.

Gross was named the A-10 Student-Athlete of the Year after recording six goals, six assists and 22 points overall on the season. He enters this week's A-10 Championship ranked tied for third in overall points and was twice named the A-10 Player of the Week. In the classroom, the Austin, Texas resident boasts a perfect 4.0 grade point average while majoring in pre-business.

Gross is joined on the Academic All-Conference team by Stuart Amick of Massachusetts; Rhode Island's Gary Crooks; Ben Horner and Stefan Lundberg of Duquesne; Ross Kaufman from Saint Louis; Sam Maheu and Kevin Okapal of St. Bonaventure; and Dayton's Alexander Torda and Tommy Watkins.

After leading Dayton to its first-ever NCAA men's soccer berth last season, Currier helped the squad to its first regular season title since 2000 and earned his first-ever Coach of the Year nod. He led the team to a first-round bye in the A-10 Championship after earning the top seed and enters the tournament with a 13-4-1 overall record. The Flyers are looking for their second straight A-10 Championship title.
