NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Richmond junior guard Brittani Shells was one of 12 women's basketball players nominated to the 2010 Players Making the Buzz list for the Nancy Lieberman Award. Shells currently leads the Spiders and the A-10 in scoring with her 17.9 points per game average.
The annual award recognizes the nation's top point guard in Division I women's basketball. The criteria for the award is floor leadership, play-making and ball-handling skills that personified Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman during her career. The award winner will be chosen by sportswriters in April.
The Camden, Del. native scored a career-high and A-10 league best 32 points against Morgan State in the St. Peter's Classic in Jersey City, N.J. Shells has led Richmond in scoring in all but one game and has notched eight game-high performances.
Shells is currently 11th in scoring on Richmond's all-time list (1,185 points). Shells recorded the first double-double of her career with against VCU (18 pts, 11 rebounds) and cracked Richmond's top 10 in career steals this past weekend. The Spiders host La Salle in their conference opener at 2 p.m. in the Robins Center.
