- Duquesne’s Wumi Agunbiade and Dayton’s Amber Deane have been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Women’s Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, the league office announced on Monday. The award marks the second-straight and third overall for Deane, while Agunbiade collects the citation for the first time this season. Both student-athletes were recognized for games played during the week of Jan. 14-20.

- For the 10th consecutive week Dayton is ranked in both the Associated Press Top 25 and the USA Today Coaches Polls. Dayton moved up one spot to No. 17 in the AP Top 25 with 343 points, improving upon the 276 last week. UD is tied with North Carolina at No. 16 in the Coaches Poll with both teams accumulating 323 points. The Flyers are just nine points from Georgia and South Carolina who both have 332 and are tied at No. 14 in the poll.


 

 

- Saint Joseph’s and St. Bonaventure will meet for the 48th time in program history in the A-10’s lone contest on Saturday. The two teams will square off at 3:00 p.m. at SJU’s Hagan Arena. The Hawks own the 36-11 series advantage.

- The A-10 remains eighth in the latest RPI Report released on Monday, Jan. 21. The Flyers continue to pace the league, coming in 12th among the nation’s top teams, while six additional teams are ranked among the top 100 – Duquesne (42), Saint Joseph’s (44), Richmond (73), Charlotte (88), Fordham (92) and Butler (94).

- Former Saint Joseph's basketball standouts Angela Zampella and Marvin O'Connor, along with Temple’s Jen Ricco will be among the inductees in the Big 5 Hall of Fame at the induction ceremony today. Joining the trio in the Class of 2013 are: Trish Juhline (Villanova) and the late Phil Jasner (Media).

- A three-time Big 5 First Team selection, Zampella (1997-01) led the Hawks to three Big 5 titles and a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances during her career at SJU.
- O'Connor was among the most prolific scorers in Saint Joseph's history in his three seasons with the Hawks (1999-2002). A three-time All-Big 5 First Team selection, O'Connor won the Geasey Award as the Big 5 Player of the Year in 2001.
- Ricco (1993-1998) was named to the Big 5 First Team in 1998 and the Second Team in 1994. She is the 11th highest scorer in Temple women's history with 1,236 points and was named to the Atlantic 10 First Team in 1998 and All-Rookie Team in 1994.
- Phil Jasner was an award-winning Philadelphia Daily News sports journalist who lost his courageous battle with cancer in December 2010. Jasner, a 1964 Temple alum, was a past president of the Professional Basketball Writers Association and Philadelphia College Basketball Writers Association.

#17/16 Dayton 80, George Washington 52 |
UD Postgame
No. 17/16 Dayton rolled to an 80-52 victory in front of 6,723 fans on its annual Math Day Thursday morning at UD Arena. Dayton continues their best start in program history by improving to 16-1 on the season, including 4-0 in Atlantic 10 action. The Flyers had a balanced scoring attack as four players scored in double digits.

Saint Louis 52, Richmond 49 | UR Highlights
Richmond's second-half rally fell short as Saint Louis edged the Spiders, 52-49, Wednesday afternoon at the Robins Center. Kristina King led Richmond with 13 points, three steals and two blocks. Five other players scored six points. Richmond suffered its first loss to the Billikens since 2008, snapping a four-game win streak in the series. The loss snapped Richmond's four-game win-streak at home and the Spiders suffered their first loss at the Robins Center since Dec. 19.

Fordham 48, Xavier 41 | XU Highlights
Xavier fell short Wednesday night in Cintas Center, losing 48-41 to the Fordham Rams. Freshman Briana Glover netted a career-high 20 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the field to along with a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. Senior Amber Gray brought down eight rebounds as did junior Shatyra Hawkes which ties a career-high.

St. Bonaventure 48, Rhode Island 28 | SBU Highlights/Postgame
St. Bonaventure (9-10, 2-2 A-10) used stellar defense to put away Rhode Island (5-14, 0-4) and claim its second straight win in conference play. Alaina Walker put together an impressive offensive performance for the second consecutive game, scoring 16 points to lead all scorers with ease. She also pulled down nine rebounds to lead all rebounders as well. The Bonnies hit the road this weekend to face off with Saint Joseph's in Hagen Arena in Philadelphia on Saturday (Jan. 26) with tip-off scheduled for 3:00 p.m. 

Duquesne 73, VCU 51  
VCU freshman Kaneisha Atwater led all scorers with a career-high 19 points and junior Robyn Parkschipped in 14 but Duquesne, behind its balanced attack, won for the 14th time in 16 games with a 73-51 victory over the Rams Wednesday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena. VCU nearly erased a 17-point deficit with 3:30 left in the first half, pulling within four less than three minutes into the second stanza, but it was as close as the Rams would get as Duquesne responded with a 15-3 run. VCU travels to fellow Atlantic 10 newcomer Butler on Jan. 27.  Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.  The Rams then welcome nationally ranked Dayton to the Verizon Wireless Arena on Jan. 30.

Temple 59, Penn 51  
After building up a 24-point lead in the second half, Temple (8-10) was able to hold off a rally by Penn (7-8) and defeat the Quakers on their home court, 59-51. The win improved the Owls’ record to 1-1 in the Big 5, while Penn finishes the city series with a record of 1-3. Victoria Macaulay led three Temple players in double figures with 15 points, nearly making it a double-double with a game-high nine rebounds. The Owls will be back in action on Sunday, Jan. 27, facing La Salle in McGonigle Hall at 2:00 p.m.

Butler 75, Massachusetts 61 | UMass Highlights | UMass Postgame
Redshirt-sophomore forward Millie Niggeling tallied a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in her first collegiate start; however, UMass women’s basketball fell to Butler, 75-61 at the Mullins Center on Wednesday evening. Senior center Jasmine Watson led all Minutewomen with 15 points on 7-for-12 shooting with a free throw and added eight rebounds. In a career-high 31 minutes, Niggeling paced UMass with a personal-best six assists and three steals. Daress McClung led the visiting squad with 20 points and 10 rebounds while Schippers also pulled down 10 boards and chipped in 19 points. UMass travels to Dayton to continue Atlantic 10 competition, facing the Flyers at UD Arena on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 2 p.m.
