LOWELL, Mass. - Eighth-seeded Saint Joseph's opened the 2011 Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Basketball Championship with a convincing, 79-55, first round win over #9 La Salle, Friday afternoon at The Tsongas Center in Lowell, Mass. With the win, SJU improves to 19-10 on the season and advances to the quarterfinals to face #1 Xavier on Saturday at 12:00PM, while La Salle falls to 10-20 overall. Freshman Erin Shields led three Hawks in double-digits, as the freshman notched 16 points, shooting 50 percent from the field (5-10) and 50 percent from three-point territory (4-8). Junior Katie Kuester added 13 points and classmate Kelly Cavallo had 11 points. For the game, Saint Joseph's shot 52.9 percent from the floor (27-of-51) and behind the arc (9-of-27), while hitting 16-of-23 from the foul line (52.9 percent). The Hawks also won the battle on the boards, 38-32, and handed out 18 assists. Nadia Duncan of La Salle led all scorers with 20 points.
GAME 2 - #5 CHARLOTTE 77, #12 MASSACHUSETTS 66
LOWELL, Mass. - Five-seed Charlotte moves on to the 2011 Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Basketball Championship Quarterfinals as they beat #12 Massachusetts, 77-66, Friday afternoon at The Tsongas Center in Lowell, Mass. The 49ers now sit at 22-8 on the season and move on to face #4 Richmond Saturday at 2:30PM. The Minutewomen fall to 7-23 overall. Charlotte's Jennifer Hailey shot a blistering 75-percent from the floor on 6-8 shooting. The sophomore finished with 18 points and nine boards. The 49ers finished with four players in double-digits and out-rebounded the Minutewomen 39-27. Massachusetts' Jasmine Watson led all scorers with 25 points.
#7 ST. BONAVENTURE 48, #10 FORDHAM 41
LOWELL, Mass. - Seventh-seeded St. Bonaventure will move on to the quarterfinals of the 2011 Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Championship, as it ground out a 48-41 win over tenth-seeded Fordham. The Bonnies improve to 20-10, while the Rams fall to 12-19 on the season. Junior Megan Van Tatenhove led the Bonnies with 14 points, scoring her 1,000th point in the process. Alaina Walker added nine points and 12 rebounds and Chelsea Bowker chipped in 10 points while shooting 4-7 from the field, 2-3 from behind the arc. St. Bonaventure held the rebounding advantage over Fordham 43-30. The Rams forced 17 turnovers in the defensive battle, coming up with 10 steals. Becky Peters led Fordham with 13 points. GAME 4 - #6 DAYTON 61, #11 GEORGE WASHINGTON 58
LOWELL, Mass. - The sixth-seed Dayton Flyers sealed a 61-58 victory over the #11 George Washington Colonials in the closing seconds of the final game of the first round of the 2011 Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Championship. With the win, the Flyers sit at 19-10, while the Colonials fall to 8-21. Dayton's Justine Raterman recorded a double-double, dropping 23 points, shooting 10-15 from the floor and 3-5 from three-point range, and grabbing 13 boards. Kristin Daugherty added 16 points, shooting 60-percent (3-5) from long range. The Flyers shot 41-percent from beyond the arc on the night. The Colonials had three players in double-figures, led by Sara Mostafa with 15 points. The Flyers will face #3 Duquesne in the quarterfinals Saturday night at 7:30PM.
