NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Richmond’s Jacob Mayers and Alex Alemann of Saint Louis were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Baseball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, the league office announced on Monday. Charlotte’s Brad Elwood was also honored as the Conference’s Rookie of the Week.

Mayers, the junior from Mechanicsville, Va., hit .500 (6-13) for the week with four home runs and six RBI against Saint Peter’s and Old Dominion. He slugged home runs in all four of the Spiders weekly contests along with scoring six runs and posting an on-base percentage of .632.

For the second consecutive weekend, Alemann was a force on the mound. The Weston, Fla., native threw a complete-game shutout in a 2-0 victory over St. Mary’s. He limited the Gaels to a .129 batting average and fanned nine while walking only three. The shutout lowered Alemann’s ERA to 0.40 on the season. He leads the Billikens with 19 strikeouts and has walked a mere four batters this season.

Elwood put together his best week in a 49ers uniform, going 6-for-13 in a four-game series against Wagner to help Charlotte to a 3-1 series win. Entering the week with just three hits, all singles and a lone RBI in six games, he had six more hits and five more RBI. He also stole his first two bases during the week. On Saturday’s DH nightcap, he hit his first career extra-base hit, a double down the right field line for an RBI in the first inning. In Sunday’s series finale, he hit a career-high two doubles, driving in a career-high three runs as the 49ers shut out the Seahawks 11-0. He added to the defensive efforts by playing second base twice in the series, logging four putouts and two assists in those games.
