West Chester University Field Hockey Program To Make Move To Division II

West Chester University will move its field hockey program to Division II, beginning with the 2011 season, it was announced today by Director of Athletics, Dr. Edward Matejkovic. The move will bring all 24 intercollegiate athletic programs at the University to the Division II level maintaining WCU's position as the largest DII program in the country.

A-10 Extends Affiliate Membership To Lock Haven University

Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade today announced that Lock Haven University will join the Atlantic 10 Conference as an affiliate member in field hockey, beginning in 2010. LHU will play a seven-game league schedule and is eligible for both the A-10 regular season and tournament championships next season.

The Richmond field hockey team played No. 2 ranked Virginia to a scoreless tie after one half, but the Cavaliers scored three second-half goals in a 14 minute span to take a 3-0 win Saturday in the NCAA Tournament. Behind the stellar goalkeeping of senior Jacki Raithel (6 saves), the Spiders kept Virginia from scoring in the opening period, but the high-powered Virginia attack could only be kept off the scoreboard for so long.

Senior Sarah Blythe-Wood tallied her second game-winning goal in as many days as top-seeded Richmond captured its sixth Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championship in the last eight years with a 3-0 win over No. 3 Temple on Saturday afternoon under blue skies at Garber Field on the campus of the University of Massachusetts. The Spiders (13-8) will face Mid-American champion Ohio University at 1:00pm on Tuesday, Nov. 10, in the NCAA Play-In Match. Blythe-Wood was named the Championship's Most Outstanding Player for her efforts.

Richmond senior forward Sarah Blythe-Wood (pictured) was named the Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year and junior defender Makaela Potts of Massachusetts earned Defensive Player of the Year honors in voting conducted by the league's head coaches. In that same vote, Rebecca Chylack of La Salle was named Rookie of the Year and Richmond head coach Gina Lucido earned the Coach of the Year honors. In a vote of the A-10's sports information directors, Charise Young repeated as the Student-Athlete of the Year.

The University of Richmond earned the top seed for the 2009 Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Championship, which gets underway on Fri., Nov. 6, at Garber Field on the campus of the University of Massachusetts. The Spiders (11-8/5-1) will take on fourth-seeded Massachusetts (12-8/3-3), the defending A-10 Champions, while No. 2 Saint Joseph's (7-10/4-2) squares off against third-seeded Temple (8-11/4-2). Saint Joseph's defeated Temple during regular season play to secure the second seed.

UMass Ranked 17th In NFHCA Preseason Poll

The National Field Hockey Coaches has released its Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I Preseason Poll with UMass beginning the season ranked 17th in the nation. The two-time defending Atlantic 10 champions finished the 2008 season ranked 17th.Since 2006, when the NFHCA first released a preseason poll, this is the first time UMass has been ranked prior to the start of the season. Richmond and Temple are also receiving votes.
