LA SALLE split a pair of contests over the weekend, first losing 5-0 at Lock Haven on Sept. 8. The Explorers bounced back on Sept. 9 with a 4-0 victory against Robert Morris. Led offensively by sophomore Colleen Lechner (Rochester, N.Y.), who picked up a hat trick with three second-half goals, the Explorers improved their record to 4-3 overall. Senior goalkeeper Ellen Axelsen (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) stopped six shots to pick up her second shutout of the 2007 season for the Explorers.

MASSACHUSETTS was up against unbeaten Vermont on Sept. 8 and despite an unassisted goal from Cher King (Christ Church, Barbados), the Minutewomen fell by a score of 3-1. The goal was her conference-leading fifth of the season. UMass continued at the Sheraton Catamount Classic with a defensive showdown against New Hampshire on Sept. 9. After a scoreless regulation from sophomore goaltender Sarah Williams (Colorado Springs, Colo.), a UNH goal 4:55 into overtime evened Massachusetts' record at 3-3.

RHODE ISLANDsenior Jeannie Records (North Kingstown, R.I.) scored the only goal of the game en route to its second-straight shutout victory with a 1-0 win over Saint Francis (Pa.) on Sept. 7. Senior M.J. Britt (Swoyersville, Pa.) turned away all five of her faced shots to pick up her ninth-career shutout. On Sept. 8, senior Jen Cetenich (Seekonk, Mass.) and sophomore Jill Powers (Leominster, Mass.) each recorded a goal and an assist as URI extended its winning streak to four games with a 3-1 defeat of Siena. Rhode Island remains the A10's only undefeated team at 4-0.

RICHMOND'S string of one-goal losses continued this weekend with a 2-1 loss to VCU on Sept. 7. Alex Malatesta (North Wales, Pa.) scored the lone goal for the Spiders in the loss. The Spiders took on Miami of Ohio on Sept. 9, but dropped their fifth straight with a 5-1 loss. The Richmond goal came courtesy of sophomore Megan Thompson (Gap, Pa.), who scored off a penalty corner with 15:40 remaining in the first half.

 

 

SAINT JOSEPH'S notched its first victory of the 2007 season on Sept. 5, holding on for a 2-1 victory over Penn. Senior Theresa Barbati (Runnemede, N.J.) and junior Marisa Pizzi (Rosemont, Pa.) recorded goals for SJU, while senior goalkeeper Rebecca Cunfer (Manheim, Pa.) recorded 10 saves in the game to preserve the victory. On Sept. 9, SJU dropped a tough 1-0 decision to No. 11-ranked James Madison, lowering the team record to 1-3.

SAINT LOUIS faced its third straight nationally-ranked Big Ten team with No. 7 Michigan State on Sept. 9. After tying the game 1-1 six minutes into the contest, the Spartans scored 10 straight to cruise to an 11-1 victory. The Billikens' Molly Boyne (Escondido, Calif.) scored SLU's lone goal, her second goal of the season.

TEMPLE split a pair of matches over the weekend, first falling to Albany 2-1 on Sept. 7. In the loss, senior Alli Lokey (Bainbridge, Pa.) netted Temple's only goal off a penalty corner. On Sept. 9, Lokey scored her team-leading third goal of the season in 53rd minute to secure a 1-0 win against nationally-ranked Syracuse. Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Hanshue (Hummelstown, Pa.) turned in a strong performance with her first shutout of the season. The win was the Owls' first over a nationally-ranked opponent since the 2002.

WEST CHESTER'S Lauren Dubois, Amanda Wynkoop, and Shelly Brooks contributed two goals each in a 9-0 route against Monmouth on Sept. 8. The Golden Rams faced off with No. 2 North Carolina the following the day (Sept. 9) and were on the losing side of the 9-0 final score which dropped the team's overall record to 3-2.
