NFHCA All-Region Teams


PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Ten Atlantic 10 field hockey players were named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-Region teams. Players from La Salle, Massachusetts, Richmond, Saint Joseph's and Temple represented the A-10 in three of the five regions. Senior Katelyn Orlando, sophomores Makaela Potts and Mary Shea, and freshman Alesha Widdall of UMass were each named to the first-team of the Northeast Region. Mary Catherine Kinneman of Temple received first-team honors in the Midatlantic Region. The five are now eligible for national All-America honors.

Orlando, UMass' leading scorer with 15 goals and an assist for 31 points, was named the Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year and to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference first team this season. She led the conference in points, goals scored and goals per game. For her career, Orlando amassed 24 goals and 11 assists for 59 points.

Shea, the Minutewomen captain for the 2008 season, was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference first team this season. For the year, she totaled four goals and six assists for 14 points. She tallied nine goals and 11 assists for 29 points. Potts was the UMass defensive captain during the 2008 season and was also named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference first team this season. She tallied four goals and three assists for 11 points while leading the team in shots with 69. Potts also led the conference in shots per game with 3.14.

Widdall saw action in 19 of UMass' 22 games this season, starting in 18 as a freshman. She was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference first team and the Atlantic 10 Co-Rookie of the Year. Widdall posted a conference best 1.06 goals against average, .792 save percentage and posted seven shutouts. Her goals against average and save percentage also ranked fifth nationally.

 

 

The reigning A-10 Defensive Player of the Year, Kinneman started every game for Temple and notched a career-high five assists, which tied for sixth in the A-10. She played on both attack and defensive corners as the corner hitter and right trail. In addition, the senior back, anchors a defensive unit that has blanked three opponents this season.

Also receiving honors by the NFHCA as second-team selection in the Midatlantic Region were juniors Kara Harpel of La Salle, Saint Joseph's Kelly Walter and Charise Young of Temple. Junior Cher King of Massachusetts and Richmond senior Alex Malatesta were also named to the second-team of the Northeast and South Region, respectively.
