Lacrosse Notebook - Week 9

(WEEK 9) - Duquesne (8-8/5-2) closed the season on a four-game winning streak to earn the #3 seed in the A-10 Championship. The Dukes defeated La Salle 18-6 on April 18 and 11-10 at Massachusetts on April 20. Junior attack Kat McNish (Caldwell, N.J.) earned co-Player of the Week honors after 12 points with five goals and seven assists on the week. She scored the game-winner versus UMass with 13 seconds left and tied a season-high with eight points (3g, 5a) versus La Salle. She has scored in 15 straight matches... George Washington finished the season 5-11 overall and 3-4 in Conference play. The Colonials won their final two regular season games upsetting top-seeded Richmond 11-10 on April 16 and topping Saint Joseph's 9-7 on April 18. Senior midfielder Kristin Karsch (Kennett Square, Pa.) had a team-high four goals, including the game-winner with 19 seconds left versus the Spiders. She also added two draw controls for a team-high total of 24 this season... La Salle finished the year at 1-15 and 0-7 in league play. Senior attack Emily Bonczek (Henrietta, N.Y.) finished the regular season as the league-leader in goals per game and ranks second nationally in the category with 3.81 goals per game. She also ranks 24th nationally in total points (65.0). Bonczek finished her career ranked second all-time at La Salle with 199 career goals... Massachusetts, the host of the 2008 Championship, earned the #4 seed after a 6-10 finish and a 4-3 mark in the Conference. Senior midfielder/defender Jeannette Villapiano (Ocean Township, N.J.) posted five goals and one assist in UM's final 1-1 weekend. She had four draws, three ground ball and one caused turnover on the weekend She had a career-high four points with three goals and an assist versus Duquesne. Freshman midfielder Jackie Lyons (Rocky Point, N.Y.) earned her second Rookie of the Week honors after netting one goal and two assists on the weekend. She also added five draw controls... Richmond earned a share of the regular season title with a record of 9-8 and 6-1 in the league and earned the #1 seed in the Championship after a head-to-head win over Temple (6-1) during the regular season. Junior midfielder Mandy Friend (Canandaigua, N.Y.) earned her third Player of the Week honor after posting 14 points on eight goals and six assists in the final weekend. She had six goals and three assists in a 13-9 win over Saint Joseph's on April 20 and added two goals and three assists in a loss at George Washington on April 16. She also added eight ground balls, seven draw controls and six caused turnovers on the week ...St. Bonaventure ended its season at 4-10 overall and 2-5 in the league. The Bonnies closed out the weekend with a 1-1 mark after a 12-7 loss at Massachusetts on April 18 and a 17-9 win over La Salle on April 20. Senior attack Brenna Houghton (Manlius, N.Y.) finished the season as the team leader in goals (29) and points (54). Her point total ranks sixth in the A-10 and 45th nationally. Senior midfielder Kimberly Ross (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) ranks second on the team in points (53) and is the team-leader in assists with 16 on the year... Saint Joseph's ended its season on a four-game losing skid for a 7-9 final record and a 2-5 mark in the A-10. The Hawks suffered a 9-7 loss to George Washington on April 18 and fell 13-9 to Richmond on April 20. Sophomore attack Jenna Martino (Oceanport, N.J.) was the team-leader in goals scored with 45 on the season and added eight assists for 53 total points. She tallied the fourth-highest goals in the Conference and ranked fourth overall in goals per game (2.81). She also ranked 32nd nationally in goals per game... Temple earned a share of its league-leading seventh regular season title after a 6-1 mark in the league and posts a league-best 11-4 record overall. The Owls have won their last eight of nine games with its loss being an 11-10 double-overtime slip to Richmond and earned the #2 seed in the Championship. Two of TU's other three losses were by one goal and its first blemish was a three-goal loss. Senior midfielder Whitney Richards (Southhampton, N.J.) leads the team offensively with 69 points on 39 goals and 30 assists. Her point total ranks 17th nationally. Richards is third in the league in points per game (4.60) and assists per game (2.00) and ranks fifth in goals per game (2.60).
