2009 LACROSSE NOTEBOOK
(Apr. 20) - Duquesne (9-8/4-3) won its last three Conference games, including an upset over top-seeded Massachusetts on April 17...captured two sudden death victories over St. Bonaventure (16-15) and UMass (15-14) and topped Temple 13-8 on April 19 to close the season...finished fourth in the standings but lost to George Washington in the head-to-head tiebreak for Championship seeding...junior Meghan Frederick (Cockeysville, Md.) was named Co-Player of the Week after notching 15 points on the 3-0 week, while freshman Katie Rekart (Ellicott City, Md.) earned Rookie of the Week honors with 12 points overall...Frederick set a new A-10 single season assists record with 44 on the year... George Washington (5-11/4-3) split over the weekend to earn the #4 seed in the A-10 Championship...lost 11-8 at Saint Joseph's on April 17 before topping La Salle 16-4 on April 19...senior Katie Lilly (Riva, Md.) posted six ground balls, nine draws and five caused turnovers in GW's strong defensive effort...leads the Colonials with a single season program record of 46 draws and 22 caused turnovers... La Salle (4-11/1-6) dropped its last two Conference matches to finish 1-6 in league play...junior Jill Davis (Folsom, Pa.) notched four goals on the weekend and is second on the team in points with 25 goals and eight assists (33 points).... Massachusetts (9-7/6-1) suffered its only Conference loss of the season at Duquesne on April 17 but bounced back with a 14-13 win at St. Bonaventure on April 19 to capture the A-10 regular season title and the top seed in the tournament...sophomore Jackie Lyons (Rocky Point, N.Y.) led the Minutewomen with 10 points on the week while freshman Brittany Brigandi (Syracuse, N.Y.) added five points...senior Holly Drown (Nashua, N.H.) set a UMass career record in draw controls with 114 so far on the year... Richmond (6-11/5-2) finished 3-0 on the week with two Conference wins to capture the second seed in the A-10 Championship...topped American earlier in the week before beating La Salle (14-5) and Saint Joseph's (12-5) over the weekend...senior Allison Furstenburg (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) earned Co-Player of the Week honors after posting 16 points on 11 goals and five assists on the week...leads the team in goals (49), assists (25) and points (74)...Spiders enter the tournament riding a four-game winning streak... St. Bonaventure (7-10/1-6) closed out the season with a tough 0-3 week in Conference play...all three losses were by a combined four goals...the Bonnies lost in sudden victory at Duquesne (16-15) on April 13 and fell 14-12 at Temple on April 17 and 14-13 versus Massachusetts on April 19...junior Molly Hastrich (Horseheads, N.Y.) led the Bonnies with 14 goals in the three contests, including a game-high six versus Duquesne, and set a new single season mark at SBU for goals in a season with 62 on the year... Saint Joseph's (9-7/5-2) topped George Washington 11-8 on April 17 before closing the regular season with a 12-5 loss to Richmond on April 19...the Hawks captured the third seed in the Championship and are making their first appearance in the postseason since 2001...senior Helene Tursi (Medford, N.J.) scored six goals and had an assist for seven points on the weekend...scored the game-winning goal over the Colonials... Temple (3-12/2-5) split in its final Conference weekend with a 14-12 win over St. Bonaventure on April 17 and a 13-8 loss at Duquesne on April 19...freshman Missy Schweitzer (Pottstown, Pa.) had six goals in the two games to lead the Owls...ranks second on the team in goals scored and is third overall in points (19)
