Rhode Island Wins A-10 Rowing Title

PENNSAUKEN, N.J. – Rhode Island claimed its third Atlantic 10 Rowing Championship Saturday morning at the Cooper River posting first-place finishes in the Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8, Varsity 4B and Novice 8 to finish the regatta with 53 points. The Colonials of George Washington, led by A-10 Coach of the Year Eric Carcich, captured second place with 42 points thanks in part to a second place finish in the Varsity 8. Massachusetts and Temple tied for third place overall with 37 points, while Dayton finished fifth (35). Rounding out this year's field was St. Joseph’s in sixth (13 points), Fordham in seventh (13), and Duquesne and La Salle tied for eighth with 11 points. Rhode Island opened the finals winning the Varsity 8 by just over four seconds crossing the finish line in a time of 6:59.84. Also in the Varsity 8, in one of the day’s most exciting finishes, George Washington edged Dayton out of second place by a miniscule .22 seconds to capture what proved to be pivotal points in the Colonials overall second-place finish. The Rams continued to gain momentum, following up the Varsity 8 first-place victory with another top finish in Second Varsity with a time of 7:10.18, edging out Massachusetts by 2.39 seconds. While the Minutewomen went on to capture first place in the Varsity 4 Final (08:10.89), Rhode Island’s point total remained out of reach from the rest of the field.
