Bulldogs Sweep A-10 Women's Soccer Weekly Honors
Oct. 8, 2012
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Butler's Kelly Mahoney and Sophia Maccagnone have been named Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Soccer Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, the league office announced Monday. It is just the second time this season that a team has swept the women's soccer weekly awards; Dayton took both honors in the second week of the season. The awards are given for games played October 5-7. Mahoney earned Player of the Week honors for her offensive efforts in two overtime wins last weekend against Dayton (Oct. 5) and Xavier (Oct. 7). The sophomore defender scored a goal in each contest, including the game-winner against Xavier in the extra period. The Buffalo Grove, Ill., native tallied the first goal in a come-from-behind win against Dayton, defending the Bulldogs' home turf and improving to eight unbeaten contests at the Butler Bowl. Butler handed Dayton its first conference loss of the season, and fourth loss overall. For the third time this season, Maccagnone has been named A-10 Rookie of the Week. Maccagnone had a goal and an assist in the 3-2 overtime win against Dayton Friday night. The rookie totaled 11 shots (eight on goal) to lift the Bulldogs over the Flyers and improve to 2-0-0 on the weekend. The Shelby Township, Mich., native led the team in shots Sunday, firing seven total and six on goal against Xavier. Maccagnone leads the Bulldogs in shots (61), goals (8) and points (17) and is third in the A-10 with eight goals. Butler improves to 8-3-2 on the season and 2-0-1 in conference play.
