PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - For the second consecutive year, Charlotte is the top seed for the 15th Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Championship, to be held Nov. 8-11 at the 49ers' Transamerica Field.
Charlotte (14-4-1/9-1-1) enters the 2007 Championship having won eight of its last nine matches while outscoring its opponents by a 17-4 margin during that span. Sophomore goalie Lauren Brown leads the A-10 with nine shutouts and looks to lead the 49ers to their first-ever A-10 crown. Charlotte will play at 5:30pm on Friday, Nov. 9, after earning an opening round bye.
Second-seeded Fordham (10-4-4/7-1-3) also earned a bye as a result of its second-place finish during the regular season, equaling the program's highest-ever finish. Vying for their first-ever Conference Championship, the Rams yielded one goal or less in 15 of their 18 matches. Fordham will play at 8:00pm on Friday, Nov. 9.
The opening contest of the 2007 A-10 Championship matches third-seeded Duquesne (11-6-0/8-3-0) against No. 6 Richmond (7-11-2/6-4-1) at 5:30pm on Thursday, Nov. 8. Senior forward Audra Mathews has ten assists and 20 points to lead the Dukes, who seek their first title in program annals. The Spiders won three of their final four matches to advance to the Championship for the first time since 2004. UR claimed its lone A-10 women's soccer title in 2002.
Thursday's second opening round match features two-time defending champion and fourth-seeded Saint Louis (10-5-2/7-2-2) versus five-time champion and fifth-seeded Dayton (12-4-3/6-2-3) at 8:00pm. The Billikens tallied at least two goals in six of their 11 league games and are vying to join Massachusetts (1993-95) as the only A-10 programs to win three consecutive A-10 crowns. UD is led by dynamic sophomore Mandi Bäck, who has amassed a team-high 30 points on 14 goals and two assists. Five of her 14 goals have been game-winners.
