Charlotte's Hackett Shuts Out Temple, 3-0
May 11, 2011
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Charlotte's bats opened up in the seventh to give the 49ers a 3-0 win over Temple in game one of the 2011 Atlantic 10 Softball Championship, held at Charlotte's D.L. Phillips Softball Complex, in Charlotte, N.C. With the win, the 49ers are now 29-22, while the Owls fall to 21-22. After six scoreless innings, Jalisa Rock jumpstarted the offense for the 49ers, with a single to right in the top of the seventh. She was then able to advance off Carol Buchan's walk to eventually score the game-winning run when Whitney Williams connected on a two-run double to left to plate the first runs of the afternoon. Williams then scored the third run of the game off Kendra McCall's double to left center. "We showed from the beginning, we were hitting her (Marris) but we were hitting it right at people, so that always makes you feel good," said Charlotte head coach Aimee DeVos. "We were coming off a defensive inning in the sixth; we made a good play to shut them down, so that always brings a little fire into it." Katy Hackett, the starter for the 49ers in game one, fanned seven, and allowed just two hits while not allowing a walk in seven innings of work. "Katy does a great job of keeping batters off-balanced as they are trying to guess what is coming next. She is in double digits on shutouts on the year at this point and time," added DeVos. "If we can get that all the way through the tournament, we are going to love life." Hackett picked up her 20th win, her tenth shutout of the season, bringing her record to 20-10. Temple's pitcher Kristen Marris picked up the loss in the circle falling to 15-11 on the season. Marris went the distance for the Owls allowing three runs on six hits as she walked two and struck out five. The 49ers move on to play Fordham, Thurs. May 12 at 1:00 p.m. The Owls will play face the loser of the matchup between Saint Joseph's and Dayton at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, May 11. --www.atlantic10.com--
