Feb. 12, 2013
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Charlotte’s Chelsea Stamey and Fordham’s Jamie LaBovick were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, the league announced Tuesday. Laney Kneib of Saint Louis was also honored as the Atlantic 10 Conference Softball Rookie of the Week. Stamey, a senior from Charlotte, NC., batted .571 (4-7) for the week with five RBI as the 49ers went 2-2 with victories against Presbyterian Saturday and Sunday. Stamey’s single game high of four RBI’s allowed Charlotte to score four runs in the fourth and eighth innings to get the win over Presbyterian on Sunday. LaBovick, a senior from Peoria, Ariz., turned in an impressive performance, making three starts and recording three wins for the Rams in their first weekend of play. LaBovick pitched two complete games, including a shutout against No. 32 Virginia Tech, recording a career-high eight strikeouts in the team’s win over Chattanooga on Sunday. Freshman Kneib was 1-1 with a save and had a 0.00 ERA at the Southern Louisiana Jimmy John’s Lion Classic this past week. The Webb City, Mo., native recorded a three-inning save against Jacksonville State in her first collegiate appearance. She was also the winning pitcher against Nicholls State, allowing no hits in four innings.
