NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Dayton’s Kasi Vazquez and Kayla English were named the Atlantic 10 Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, the league announced Tuesday. Teammate Paige Rhodes was also honored as the Atlantic 10 Conference Softball Rookie of the Week.
Vazquez, a junior, led the Flyers to a 2-3 record this past weekend with a team high .538 average, seven hits, a 1.154 slugging percentage, and two home runs. The Columbus, Ohio, native also had two doubles, four runs scored, and three RBI’s. Vazquez’s top performance over the weekend was a 2-for-3 outing against Valparaiso in which she had a double, a home run, two RBI’s, and two runs scored.
English, a sophomore, pitched 18 1/3 inning s and picked up both of Dayton’s wins last weekend while recording a 2-1 record. The Grapevine, Texas, native ace pitched two complete games including a nine-inning, 6-5 win over Pittsburgh. With 16 strikeouts, English is sixth on the Flyer’s all-time career strikeout list.
Freshman Rhodes appeared in all five games for the Flyers and recorded a .333 average and four hits. In 12 at-bats, the Grove City, Ohio, native recorded two doubles, two RBI’s, and two runs scored.
