Sixth-Seeded Saint Joseph's Upsets Third-Seeded Temple, 5-0
May 9, 2012 ST. LOUIS - Sixth-seeded Saint Joseph's upset third-seeded Temple, 5-0, in the second game of the 2012 Atlantic 10 Conference Softball Championship at the Billiken Sports Center in St. Louis. With the win, Saint Joseph's improves to (21-27-1) on the season and advances to tomorrow's matchup against second-seeded Fordham (31-24) at 3:30 PM CT, while Temple falls to (27-21) and will take on fifth-seeded Charlotte (28-25) tonight at 6:00 PM in the championship's first elimination game. The 49ers fell to George Washington, 9-2, earlier this afternoon. Saint Joseph's jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, after capitalizing on a few Temple second inning miscues, including an error and a pass ball that both allowed runs to score. In the fourth inning, Saint Joseph's Bernadette Moran, an A-10 First Team All-Conference performer, added an RBI single to push the lead to 4-0. Alaina Loguidice raised the Saint Joseph's lead to five, 5-0, with an RBI double to left-center that drove in Maria Ficca. Rochelle Christman also added her fourth home run of the season in the seventh inning to increase the lead to six, 6-0. Leading the way for the Hawks on the mound was starter Erin Gallagher. Gallagher (11-14) threw a complete game shutout in which she allowed only three base hits while striking out two. Temple's Brooklin White (14-11) picked up the loss after allowing six runs, three of them earned, on eight base hits while walking six. Play continues at the A-10 Softball Championship this evening, as No. 3 Temple takes on No. 5 Charlotte at 6:00 PM CT. Live audio and video will be provided during the Championship to fans, free of charge, through the Atlantic 10 website - www.atlantic10.com.
