May 9, 2012 ST. LOUIS – Fifth-seeded Charlotte defeated the third-seeded Temple, 4-2, in the third game of the 2012 A-10 Conference Softball Championship at the Billiken Sports Center in St. Louis. With the win, Charlotte improves to 29-25 on the season and will be looking to fight off elimination again tomorrow night as they will face an opponent that is still to be determined. That game will take place on Thursday, May 10, at 6:00 PM CT. Temple falls to 27-22 with the loss and becomes the first team eliminated from the double-elimination A-10 Softball Championship. The Owls got on the scoreboard first following a Stephanie Pasquale RBI double in the bottom of the first inning that plated Ali Robinson and gave the Owls and early 1-0 lead. The 49ers responded in the fourth inning after a Chelsea Ingersoll RBI groundout scored Chelsea Stamey and evened the game up at 1-1. With a runner on first base and no outs, an error by Temple shortstop Sarah Prezioso put Charlotte’s Lorena Vela in scoring position and then later scored on a two-out infield single to give Charlotte its first lead of the game, 2-1. In the sixth inning, the 49ers scraped out a run for the third consecutive inning as Lorena Vela picked up an RBI single to drive in Natalie Capone and make the score 3-1. Charlotte added another insurance run in the top of the seventh inning when Chelsea Ingersoll recorded her second RBI of the game on a single that scored Hayley Lewis to increase the lead to three, 4-1. The Owls added a late run in the bottom of the seventh on a Samantha Schoell RBI single that cut the lead to 4-2, before Charlotte was able to close out the victory. Picking up the win for the 49ers, was starting pitcher Katie Watkins (13-12). Wilkins threw a complete game shutout, while allowing only two runs on six hits while striking out seven. Taking the loss for the Owls was Capri Catalano (8-8) who also went the distance throwing a complete game and allowed four runs, three of them earned, on 10 hits.
