Fordham Defeats Saint Joseph's, 4-1
May 10, 2012 ST. LOUIS – Defending Atlantic 10 Champions Fordham topped sixth-seeded Saint Joseph’s, 4-1, in game five of the 2012 Atlantic 10 Softball Championship at the Billiken Sports Center on the campus of Saint Louis University. With the win, Fordham improved to 32-24 on the season and will now take on top-seeded Massachusetts, Friday, May 11 at 1:00 PM CT. Saint Joseph’s is now 21-28-1 on the year, and will face fifth-seeded Charlotte in tonight’s championship elimination game at 6:00 PM CT. Fordham struck early as Chelsea Palumbo connected on a two-run home run to left field in the bottom of the second inning to give the Rams an early, 2-0, lead over the Hawks. Saint Joseph’s Lauren Rendon broke through in the top of the fifth inning and drove in Dana Parks on an RBI single to cut the deficit to one, 2-1. Fordham added a couple insurance runs in the sixth inning as Paige Ortiz hit a two-run home run to increase the lead to 4-1. Picking up the win for Fordham was starting pitcher Jen Mineau, who improved her record to 25-13 on the season. Mineau went the distance for the Rams, throwing 7.0 innings allowing only one run on four hits while striking out seven. Taking the loss for Saint Joseph’s was Taryn Ashway (10-14). Ashway threw 6.0 innings while allowing four runs on five hits. Play continues at the A-10 Softball Championship tonight, as No. 5 Charlotte faces No. 6 Saint Joseph's at 6:20 PM CT.
