2012 Volleyball Report
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Atlantic 10 Conference has named Dayton senior Samantha Selsky Offensive Player of the Week, and Xavier senior Stephanie Vorherr Defensive Player of the Week. Saint Louis freshman Megan Gilbert was also named Rookie of the Week. The A-10 announced the awards Monday for matches played Oct. 22-28.
Selsky was crucial to Dayton's success this past weekend as the setter averaged 13 assists per set and hit .500 in the two Flyer wins. The Manhattan Beach, Calif., native recorded 31 assists, seven blocks, and hit for a 1.000 percentage in the Flyers' 3-0 win over George Washington on Friday. The following night, Selsky totaled 47 assists, six kills, and 10 digs on senior night in a 3-0 win over Duquesne in the Frericks Center. The senior is in the top 20 in the nation in assists per set and leads the Atlantic 10 conference.
Vorherr passed the 2,000-career digs mark by posting 27 digs against Duquesne on Friday night. The 27 digs was enough to move her into fourth-place on the Atlantic 10 all-time digs chart and was the most digs by any A-10 player in a three-set match this season. She averaged a sensational 9.0 digs per set in the match. A Cincinnati, Ohio, native, Vorherr added another 24 digs against George Washington. On the weekend, the Cincinnati native registered 51 total digs and averaged 6.38 d/s. With 450 digs on the season, the sixth-highest total in program history, she stands just 12 shy of registering her fourth top-five season.
Gilbert paced the Billiken attack over the weekend, leading SLU to a 2-1 week. The middle blocker tallied 37 kills and hit .478 to lead the Billikens. A native of Tripoli, Iowa, she recorded 14 kills on 25 attacks without recording an error in a non-conference match against Eastern Illinois, followed by 13 kills against Rhode Island and 10 kills and a .500 hitting percentage in a win over Fordham. She had a 3.08 kills per set average and 14 blocks during the week for a 1.17 average.
