2006 A-10 Volleyball All-Conference Teams
PHILADELPHIA, PA- Dayton senior middle blocker Faye Barhorst and redshirt-sophomore teammate Erin Schroeder earned 2006 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and Setter of the Year honors, respectively, in voting conducted among the Conference's head coaches.
In that same vote, outside hitter Sammi McCloud of Saint Louis was tabbed Rookie of the Year and her coach Anne Kordes was named Coach of the Year. Additionally, Xavier senior outside hitter Danielle Skrajewski was named Student-Athlete of the Year for the second straight year in voting by the Conference's sports information directors.
Barhorst earns her second straight Player of the Year honor and is the fourth straight Flyer to garner the award. She enters the Atlantic 10 Championship as the league-leader in hitting percentage with a .446 clip, which also ranks second nationally, and blocks at 1.30 per game. A native of Fort Loramie, OH, the senior was twice named the A-10 Player of the Week this season and is a three-time All-Conference honoree after being named the 2003 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year. She is UD's all-time leader in three statistical categories and helped lead Dayton to the top-seed in this weekend's Atlantic 10 Volleyball Championship.
Schroeder becomes the second straight setter from Dayton to earn Setter of the Year honors. The Cincinnati, OH, native averages 13.57 assists in league games to rank third in the Conference and 12.42 assists overall. She ranks first among setters in the league in digs with 2.61 digs per Conference game.
Joining Barhorst and Schroeder on the All-Conference first-team are teammate Jamie-Lynn Richards; Xavier's Astyn Bjorkland and Danielle Skrajewski; Cori Dayton from Charlotte; Temple's Yue Liu; and Tatyanna Menshikova and Angela Powers of Saint Louis.
The All-Conference second-team is comprised of Robynne Green of Dayton; Fordham's Tasha Johnston and Marija Markovic; Lynae Mulder and Jessica Oldenburg of Charlotte; Temple's Sun Ying Ling and Patricia Vernon; and Jenn Welsh and Jill Quayle of Xavier.
McCloud enjoyed an outstanding rookie season at Saint Louis. The outside hitter from Columbia, IL, garnered three Rookie of the Week honors during the season and led all rookies in kills per game with 2.39 during Conference play. She posted a double-double with 10 kills and a career-high 19 digs in the last regular season match versus Dayton to help SLU secure a share of the West Division regular season title.
McCloud is joined on the rookie team by teammates Whitney Behrens and Whitney Roth; Xavier's Lauren Kaminsky; Abby Syverson of George Washington; and Duquesne's Chelsea Tillotson.
Skrajewski is the Student-Athlete of the Year and is a three-time member of the A-10 All-Conference teams. She currently leads Xavier in kills (396), kills per game (3.96), digs (250) and points (393). She ranks fourth in the league in kills per game. The outside hitter from Downingtown, PA, was a two-time A-10 Player of the Week and earned 2006 CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team as a biology major.
Along with Skrajewski, the Academic All-Conference volleyball team consists of Jenni Gross and Amanda Haeg of Duquesne; Charlotte's Eden Ramos; Maggie Wright from George Washington; and Ivy Zuidhof of Rhode Island.
Kordes is in her third season as head coach at Saint Louis and has compiled a 48-41 record. She led the Billikens to a share of the 2006 A-10 regular-season title, the first for the program since 1989. A 1998 graduate of Louisville, she is the ninth head volleyball coach at Saint Louis.
