DAYTON, Ohio - Dayton used an all around team effort to earn its second ever NCAA Tournament win as the 15th-seeded Flyers swept Lipscomb, 3-0 (30-17, 30-25, 30-19) in a First Round match at the Dayton Sub-Regional on Friday.
Hosting the tournament for the first time, UD rolled to a convincing win before a school-record, sellout crowd of 1,864 at Frericks Center.
"It was definitely a great atmosphere to play in," said senior libero Adrienne Green. "It's something we always wanted to do [hosting]. The fans were fantastic."
Green led the squad with 16 digs on the night as the Flyers improved to a nation's best 33-1 overall. Dayton also received stellar performances from a pair of freshmen. Lindsay Fletemier led all players with 13 kills on .579 hitting, while Yvonne Marten added 11 kills to the Dayton offense.
UD overwhelmed Lipscomb in the early going. At one point the Flyers controlled the opening game of the match 15-2. They would go on to take it 30-17 and never looked back.
Junior setter Erin Schroeder recorded 40 assists and directed the Flyer offense to an efficient .336 hitting percentage for the match. The Flyer defense held up its end too and out-blocked the Bison front-line 8-2, while holding Lipscomb to an .066 hitting percentage.
It was a monumental win for the Flyers, who will now advance to play in the second round of the NCAA tourney for the second time in the last four years.
The last time a UD team advanced this far in the national tournament was after a thrilling triumph over Michigan State in 2003. Those same Spartans were at the Frericks Center on Friday, playing in the night's first match, where they knocked off the University of Kentucky 3-0.
With two sweeps in the books, the stage is set for the Second Round showdown between the Flyers and Spartans on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. ET.
